Meet the Director

Capturing Children's Imagination

Jo Payne is a British theatre maker, performer, and educator with nearly two decades of experience working with children and young people through musical theatre.

As the founder and artistic director of The Star Project Theatre School, Jo’s work is driven by a deep belief in the transformative power of the performing arts. Since founding The Star Project in 2006, she has built a programme recognised for its artistic integrity, high standards, and ability to nurture confidence and creativity in young performers.

Jo began her career as a performer in the UK before moving into theatre making and education, where her natural leadership and passion for mentoring quickly became central to her work. Her approach combines professional-level training with warmth, clarity, and a genuine understanding of how children learn and grow.

In 2018, Jo relocated to Canada and is now a proud Canadian citizen. During her time in Ontario, she opened and led a successful Star Project programme in collaboration with The Dream Centre Waterdown, creating a thriving community built on trust, creativity, and shared artistic values. Throughout this time, Jo continued to run the UK Head Office remotely, returning each summer to direct the main stage production and maintain strong creative continuity across both countries.

Jo is widely respected not only for her teaching, but for her exceptional leadership and mentorship. She has extensive experience directing large-scale productions and theatre festivals, bringing together performers, creatives, and teaching teams with calm authority and clear artistic vision. Her ability to manage complex productions while maintaining a positive, supportive environment is often described as effortless — a result of careful planning, strong communication, and deep care for the people she works with.

Those who work alongside Jo often speak of her ability to “bring it all together” — transforming ambitious ideas into polished, joyful productions that feel almost magical on stage. This sense of magic is rooted in trust, preparation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Now based in South Surrey, Jo is excited to be stepping back into the classroom and leading The Star Project Theatre locally. She is passionate about creating a space where children feel safe to take creative risks, discover their voices, and grow in confidence — both on stage and beyond.
